Redact Image is a browser tool that hides private details in a picture. You drop in an image, drag boxes over the parts to hide, pick a style, and save a new copy where those areas are covered. The covered pixels are changed in the saved file, so the hidden content is not left behind as a layer you could peel away.

The tool runs in your browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, and it keeps working with the network switched off after the first load. There is no account to create, no ads, no analytics, and no cookies. It opens PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, and BMP files. For an animated GIF, only the first frame is used.

You choose every box yourself, because the tool does not detect text automatically. Check the saved result before you share it.

How to use the Redact Image tool

  1. Drop your image onto the tool. It accepts PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, or BMP files.
  2. Choose a style: Solid black (recommended), Solid white, or Pixelate.
  3. Drag a box over each area you want to hide. Repeat for every detail, such as a name, number, or face.
  4. Boxes that reach past the edge of the picture are cut off at the edge. Look at the boxes on screen. If one is in the wrong place, press Undo last box. To start over, press Clear all boxes.
  5. Save the result as PNG or JPEG.
  6. Open the saved file and check that every area you meant to hide is covered.

Undo last box and Clear all boxes only work on boxes you have not saved yet. PNG keeps the saved picture exact, while JPEG usually gives a smaller file. Whichever format you pick, the boxes are part of the picture once saved, so review the file before sending it anywhere.

Boxes are drawn on a copy of the picture, so you can try different styles on the same boxes. Change Style at any time and the boxes redraw. Nothing is saved until you press Save image, and the saved file is a new download; the original file is not changed.

Redaction changes the pixels rather than placing something on top of the picture. The covered areas are replaced in the saved file, so the boxes become part of the image itself. Anything you do not cover stays visible, and the tool cannot spot it for you, so the choices you make while dragging boxes decide what is protected.

Which redaction style should I pick?

Solid black is the recommended choice in this tool, and Solid white works the same way with a white box. Pixelate blurs the area into blocks, but it is marked as weak because pixelation on text can sometimes be reversed.

PixelateBlurs the area into blocksWeak, especially on text

For most private details, use Solid black and check the saved file at full size.

What file formats are supported?

The tool opens PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, and BMP files, and it saves as PNG or JPEG. A converted copy is the saved output, so the original file type is not kept unless you save in that same format.

Animated GIFs are handled by their first frame only, so check that the frame you need is the one shown.

A solid box is the only style that leaves no trace of what was under it: the pixels are replaced, not blurred.

What happens to the original file?

Nothing. The tool never changes the file you dropped; it draws a new picture and saves that as a separate download. Your original, with any EXIF or location data it holds, stays where it is, so do not send the original by mistake.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use Redact Image?

Drop your image into the tool, drag a box over each area to hide, choose a style, and save as PNG or JPEG. The numbered steps above cover each control.

How do I redact a JPEG file?

Drop the JPEG into the tool and follow the steps above. Save as JPEG if you want the same file type back, or as PNG for an exact copy.

What does “redact image” mean?

To redact an image means to hide part of it, such as a face, a name, or an address, so the hidden part cannot be read. This tool does that by covering areas with a box or pixelating them.

Is my data safe with Redact Image?

Your image stays on your device because the editing runs in your browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, and the page’s security policy only allows requests to scrubproof.com.

Does the saved file keep location data?

No. The saved file is drawn from the pixels, so EXIF data such as location details is not carried over. Your original file still has that data, so do not share the original.

Does Redact Image find text automatically?

No. There is no automatic text detection, so you must drag a box over every name, number, or other detail. Look at the saved file to confirm nothing was missed.

Does Redact Image work offline?

Yes. Once the page has loaded it works with the network switched off, because the picture is drawn and saved inside your browser tab.

Can I undo a redaction?

Before saving, Undo last box removes the latest box and Clear all boxes removes every box. After saving, the boxes are part of the picture, so keep your original file if you may need it again.
